Official American Bully

Breed Standard

This breed has extreme tolerance for children and adults alike. This breed also has an overwhelming eagerness to please its family. Confident, yet not aggressive, this breed has an overall pleasant temperament. Physically, the American Bully has a graceful yet impressive, solid, defined, athletic build that is both muscular and toned, and denotes strength as well as agility. It is a breed capable and diverse in tasks and abilities. The American Bully is a well rounded, reliable, trustworthy, and all around great family companion.

General Impression
The American Bully should give the impression of great strength for its size. It is a medium size dog with a muscular body with great proportion. It has a well balanced, short-coated, muscular and athletic animal. Males are characteristically larger, heavier boned and more masculine than the females.

Size - Height and weight should be in proportion. A height of about 17 to 22 inches at shoulders for the male and 16 to 21 inches for the female is to be considered preferable. There is no particular weight for the breed.

Head- Medium length, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, and high set ears.

Ears - Natural or Cropped.

Eyes – All colors but albinism is accepted. Eye shape would be round to oval, low down in skull and set far apart. Full black eye pigment is preferred; the haw should not be visible.

Faults include pink eye rims, or excessive haw visible, Crossed or non-symmetrical eyes. 


Muzzle – Medium length rounded on upper side or slightly squared to fall away abruptly below eyes. Jaws well defined. Lips close and even, some looseness accepted, but not preferred.

 

Bite – A tight scissors bite is preferred.  Undershot or overshot up to ½ inch acceptable, plus or minus 1/8 inch is acceptable with no visible teeth.

Nose - Full black pigment is preferred but all colors are acceptable.

Faults include grizzled or dudley noses. Lack of full filled in pigment.

Neck - Heavy, slightly arched, tapering from shoulders to back of skull. No looseness of skin. Medium length and well proportioned.

Body - Well sprung ribs, deep in rear and all ribs close together. fairly compact, straight and well balanced.  The chest should not be narrow or excessively wide, nor should the elbows be angled out or pulled in.  The back should be broad and moderately short, showing great strength.

Faults include Dogs back should not be narrow or excessively long, or swayed.

Forequarters - The chest should be deep and moderately wide giving the appearance of power and athletic ability. The front, overall, should be straight and well balanced. The chest should not be narrow or excessively wide.

Faults include upright or loaded shoulders; elbows turned outward or tied-in; down at the pasterns; front legs bowed; wrists knuckled over; toeing in or out.

Hindquarters:

Broad, well muscled with muscles tapering well to the leg to manifest strength. There should not be an excess or lack of angulation in the rear legs.

Faults include, Narrow or weak hindquarters, weak pasterns, cow hocks, open hocks, or bowed legs.

Back - Fairly short, slight sloping from withers to rump or straight accepted with gentle short slope at rump to base of tail. Faults include higher hindquarters.

Legs - The chest should be deep and moderately wide giving the appearance of power and athletic ability. The front, overall, should be straight and well balanced. The chest should not be narrow.

Feet- The feet are round, medium in size; toes are well arched, and tight.

Faults include Splayed feet or crooked toes. 

Tail - Short in comparison to size, low set, tapering to a fine point. Strong at the root tapering to the hocks, in a relaxed position, the tail can be carried back when excited.  A "pump handle" tail is preferred but any tail carried from upright, when the dog is excited, to relaxed between the hocks is acceptable. The tail should not end in a complete circle.

Faults include, tail curled over the back; corkscrew tail, kinked or crooked tail.

Gait- Should be springy with drive off the rear showing great power.  The dog should not travel excessively wide, and as speed increases the feet move toward the centerline of the body to maintain balance. The top line remains firm and sloping, parallel to the line of motion.

Faults include legs not moving on the same plane; legs over reaching; legs crossing over in front or rear; front or rear legs moving too close or touching; pacing; paddling; side winding.

Coat - Short, close, stiff to the touch, and glossy.

Faults include long and fuzzy coats.

Color - All colors and patterns are permissible.

Faults - Pink eye rims, or excessive haw visible, crossed or non-symmetrical eyes, grizzled or dudley noses, lack of full filled in pigment, dogs back should not be narrow, or excessively long or swayed, upright or loaded shoulders, elbows turned outward or tied-in, down at the pasterns, front legs bowed, wrists knuckled over, toeing in or out, narrow or weak hindquarters, weak pasterns, cow hocks, open hocks, or bowed legs, splayed feet or crooked toes, tail curled over the back; corkscrew tail, kinked or crooked tail, legs not moving on the same plane, legs over reaching, legs crossing over in front or rear, front or rear legs moving too close or touching, pacing, paddling, side winding, long and fuzzy coats.

Disqualifications - Males without two testicles, dogs that are deaf and dogs that have been spayed or neutered are not allowed to compete in the conformation ring. Females in estrus are not to be shown in the conformation classes and are not allowed in the proximity thereof.
